If you’ve ever said, “I just need to get my life together before I join a gym,” you’re overthinking it.
We’ve both spent years working on routines. Fitness, nutrition, sleep, etc.
The main thing we’ve learned is that your routine will ever be perfect. But it does need to exist.
And more importantly, It needs to work for your life.
What Your Morning Routine Actually Does
A lot of people think a morning routine has to be this long, complicated checklist.
Wake up at 5am.
Journal.
Meditate.
Cold plunge.
Read 10 pages.
Drink green juice.
That’s great… if it works for you. But for most people, that’s where things fall apart. What we’ve found, both in our own lives and working with people at our gym, is that your morning is simply an opportunity to stack small wins early. That’s it. You wake up. You do one or two things right. And now your day has momentum.
How Our Routine Has Changed Over Time
If you rewind to college, our “routine” was basically: Wake up…work out…go to class. (and more alarm snoozing than I would like to admit) That was it, it had no structure or intention. After college, it didn’t get much better. We still prioritized working out because we knew it made us feel good, but everything else was random. Life continued to change and we got new jobs, moved states, got married, opened the gym, and eventually had a kid. When your time gets limited, you don’t get to “wing it” anymore. We learned very quickly that if it doesn’t happen in the morning, it probably doesn’t happen at all.
The Reality: Your Routine Will Get Thrown Off
Mornings, like life, don’t always go according to plan. Some days, you wake up later than you wanted. Maybe the baby cried all night, or work ran late, or you just didn’t get to bed on time.
On those mornings, your routine might look completely different than usual. Breakfast gets skipped or replaced with whatever’s quick. Your devotional, journaling, or cold shower might not happen. Maybe your workout gets pushed back or even missed.
And that’s okay. It doesn’t mean your whole routine is ruined or that you failed. What matters is the choice you make after that morning hits a bump: do you stay off track, or do you get back on?
We’ve learned that the key is flexibility and consistency. You’ll get knocked around but what separates progress from frustration is your ability to show up the next day and keep stacking wins.
The “Rules” We Actually Follow
We don’t have a perfect routine, but we do have a few simple rules that help us stay consistent:
1. No Snoozing
When the alarm goes off, we get up. It sounds small, but it matters. Because the first decision you make in the morning sets the tone for everything else.
2. Start With Water And Protein
Before coffee, before anything else we hydrate and eat a high protein meal (Usually eggs). It’s an easy nutritional win.
3. One Productive Action
Make the bed. Clean something. Move your body. Just one thing that makes you feel like you started the day right.
4. No Phone For 1 Hour
Keeping your phone away for the first hour of your day helps you stay focused and start your morning on your terms. This helps give us space for our routine without any distractions.
Why This Matters for the Gym
A lot of people think motivation is what gets them to the gym.
It’s not.
Momentum is.
When your morning starts with small wins, it becomes way easier to show up to the gym, follow through on your workout, make better nutrition choices, and stay consistent long-term. The people who succeed at the gym aren’t perfect. They’re just consistent. That consistency usually starts before they even walk through the doors.
If You’re Starting From Scratch, Do This
If your routine feels all over the place right now, don’t try to fix everything at once. Pick one habit. Do it first thing in the morning. Repeat it for 30 days. That’s it.
Some potential things to consider adding in could be: Drinking a glass of water, eating a high-protein breakfast, going for a 5-minute walk, reading something positive, not hitting snooze. It doesn’t matter what it is. What matters is that you do it consistently.
